Feeling Stuck in Midlife? The Beliefs That May Be Holding You Back

If you’re feeling stuck in midlife, it’s easy to assume you need more motivation, more confidence, or a bigger push to get moving again. But after coaching women for more than 40 years, I’ve noticed something different. Women rarely stop doing things because they can’t. Somewhere along the way, they begin to believe they probably shouldn’t.

Maybe you’ve caught yourself thinking, I probably shouldn’t wear that anymore, or I’m too old to sign up for that class. Maybe there’s something new you’d like to try, but before you even seriously consider it, you’ve already decided it’s probably not for you.

No one hands us a list of midlife rules. Yet after hearing certain messages for years, we can start treating them as facts.

The Midlife Rules You Never Chose

Think about some of the messages women hear as they get older: Act your age. Slow down. Don’t make a fuss. Put everyone else first. Don’t expect too much. Be grateful for what you have.

Some of these messages may have come from our mothers or grandmothers. Others came from watching women around us or from the expectations society places on women. At first, they’re simply ideas we hear. Over time, they can become expectations, and eventually they become part of the story we tell ourselves.

That’s when things get interesting, because we stop questioning whether those stories still fit the lives we’re living now. Instead, they start sounding like our own voice.

We don’t wake up one morning and decide to play small or make our lives less interesting. It happens in much quieter ways, through the choices we stop making.

Feeling Stuck Can Show Up in the Choices You Stop Making

Maybe there’s a class you’ve always wanted to take, but you look at it and think you’re too old. Maybe you have something meaningful to contribute to a conversation, but you stay quiet because it’s easier not to rock the boat.

Perhaps you’ve dreamed about taking a trip, but once you start thinking about the flights, hotels, and planning, you decide you probably couldn’t pull it off. Or maybe you’ve stopped believing that you can still become stronger, healthier, or happier than you are today.

Nobody necessarily told you no. Somewhere along the way, you started telling yourself, Maybe that’s not for me anymore.

That’s why these old beliefs matter. They don’t just influence what you think. They influence the choices you make, and over time those choices can change what you believe is possible for your future.

Think about the woman you were 10 years ago—not how she looked, but how she thought. Were you more curious? Were you more willing to try something new? Were you more open to surprising yourself or excited about what might still be ahead?

If that has changed, it’s worth asking why. Was it really your age, or the story you gradually started believing about it?

Getting Unstuck Starts With Questioning the Story

There’s a lot of talk about reinventing yourself in midlife. I don’t think you need to become an entirely different person. I’m much more interested in becoming more fully yourself—who you are today and who you’re still becoming.

One way to begin is to listen for the word should. At my age, I should… A woman my age shouldn’t…

When you catch one of those thoughts, get curious. Where did that belief come from? Is it actually true for you? Or have you simply repeated it long enough that it feels true?

Instead of asking, What should a woman my age do? Try asking, What feels true for me now?

That doesn’t mean ignoring the realities of getting older. Our bodies change. Our circumstances change. We change. But growth doesn’t have to stop because we age.

Sometimes getting unstuck in midlife begins with recognizing that an old story has been making decisions for you—and deciding that it doesn’t get to make the next one.

The stories you’ve carried may have shaped your past, but they don’t have to determine your future. Midlife isn’t a story you have to follow. It’s a chapter you get to write.
