#013. How To Overcome Perfectionism Right Now

In today’s episode, we talk about how to overcome perfectionism. I must admit I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and it can be a curse. I’m frustrated when things don’t work right away. I have no patience for that. Like myself, many of us are professional women or business owners who deal with business-related perfectionism. So today, we’re moving a little bit away from the home and house perfectionism and focusing more on work.

The curse of the perfectionist is to make things better. Nothing is ever good enough.

“It could be better if …” you say in your head.

“I work more on it. I spend more hours on it. If I had prepared just a little bit better.”

So as we’re trying to be perfect, we’re trying to live an ideal life or have perfect presentations. What happens when we’re trying to be perfect? It causes tremendous stress. You’re stressed about everything because nothing seems to gel together, nothing seems to work, nothing seems to flow. There’s always something that could be better.

How To Overcome Perfectionism Right Now

Here are my three strategies to overcome perfectionism.

#1 – Don’t pull the plug if something isn’t working right away

Don’t pull the plug right away. See what is working and what isn’t working.

#2 – Forgive yourself for not being perfect

Pat yourself on the back for the things you nailed. Whatever it may be, pat yourself on the back and do not forget to ask yourself, “Did I achieve my purpose?” It is so much more meaningful than you think.

#3 – Set goals that are specific and measurable but also realistic

Do the best you can, and forgive yourself for not being perfect. It’s okay. Learn from your mistakes. Others do, and you will only grow and grow and enjoy the process of this growth.

Setting goals is an essential part of personal and professional development for several reasons:

    1. Direction and Focus: Goals provide a sense of direction and purpose. They guide your focus and help you maintain momentum in life. A clear understanding of what you aim for can help you organize your time and resources effectively.
    2. Motivation: Goals can serve as a motivator by providing something to strive for. They inspire you to work harder, change certain behaviors, or learn new skills. Reaching a goal can bring a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
    3. Measurable Progress: With specific goals, you can measure progress and see how far you’ve come. This feedback loop is important as it helps you adjust your strategies if needed and keeps you motivated to keep pushing forward.
    4. Self-Confidence: When you set a goal and achieve it, it contributes to building your self-confidence and belief in your abilities. It reinforces your understanding of your own capabilities and strengths.
    5. Decision Making: Clear goals can help you make better decisions because they give you a benchmark to determine which choices will move you closer to your objectives.
    6. Long-term Vision: Goal setting helps you look beyond daily tasks and understand what you want in the long term. It keeps you aligned with your overall vision and helps ensure the steps you’re taking today are contributing to your broader objectives.

Remember, it’s important not just to set goals but to set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). This helps make your goals more concrete, manageable, and trackable.
